As expected, UFC 125 will be headlined by a lightweight rematch between champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynad. However, the world’s premier MMA promotion threw a curve ball at fans by naming their New Year’s Day card ‘Resolution’ instead of the ‘Edgar vs. Maynard II’ moniker most had been anticipated.
“We always put a huge card together in Vegas to kick off the New Year,” said UFC president Dana White. “As the main event for UFC 125, defending UFC champion Frankie Edgar is going to take on Gray Maynard who is the only fighter ever to beat him.
“In the co-main event it’s a heavyweight war with Shane Carwin vs. Roy Nelson, plus Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi and Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann – this is going to be a killer start to 2011.”
Maynard is looking for a repeat performance of his lopsided unanimous decision win over Edgar from back in April 2008. He stakes claim to a nearly perfect 10-0 (1 NC) record and schooled former top contender Kenny Florian at UFC 118 to earn the nod.
“I’m excited and honored to be fighting Frank Edgar in a lightweight title bout for the UFC,” Maynard said. “Edgar is a great opponent. I’m looking forward to an exciting and tough fight with him. After years of hard work and sacrifice, this brings me one step closer to my goal of winning the belt.”
Speaking of a nearly flawless record, Edgar’s resume reads 13-1 courtesy of Maynard. In addition to his back-to-back drubbings of BJ Penn, he’s also rattled off five straight wins overall.
Edgar will be entering his third consecutive title fight when he rematches Maynard on January 1st. The scrap marks his second straight as the division’s king.
“I’m very excited to be fighting New Year’s Day against a fighter that has a win over me,” Edgar said. “I’m looking forward to putting on a great show and avenging my one loss. There are still a lot of people that are doubting me and that’s fine. I’ve learned a lot since our last fight and I plan on successfully defending my title.”
“UFC 125: Resolution” takes places inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
