And then there were 10. As in only ten bouts remaining on the “UFC 122: Marquardt vs. Okami” roster. Although the event is officially underway inside the Konig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, Alessio Sakara was abruptly scratched from tonight’s co-main event against Jorge Rivera.
An Octagon source told FightersOnly, Sakara “woke up sick, with nausea and flu-like symptoms. He saw a doctor and he was really ill. He came to the arena anyway and was going to fight, but his symptoms came back in a big way and he is too sick to fight.”
There are also reports the striker was vomiting backstage, which prompted the world’s premier mixed martial arts show to scrap the co-featured contest just hours before he was to take the stage.
No word on what may have caused his illness, or if it had anything to do with yesterday’s weight cut. Sakara typically drops around 15 pounds to hit the middleweight mark.
It’s not the first time the two have been forced to cancel a scheduled showdown.
They were originally slated to meet at UFC 118 in August. That time, it was Rivera who was forced out after suffering a broken arm.
The preliminary welterweight bout between Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Nick Osipczak has been promoted to the televised card.
