Courtesy of Yushin Okami’s unanimous decision victory over Nate Marquardt at UFC 122, middleweight king Anderson Silva is one step closer to avenging his controversial DQ loss to Okami at “Rumble on the Rock 8” back in January 2006.
“The Spider” puts his strap on the line against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 on February 5th, so the mulligan is far from a done deal. Okami-san will then face the winner, it’s a championship opportunity that’s been nearly five years in the making.
He was penciled in for a UFC 90 title fight against Silva in January of 2006. Unfortunately, he was stung by the injury bug prior to showtime and was forced to withdraw with a broken hand. He posted an uneventful unanimous decision win over Dean Lister in his comeback fight, then lost a critical contest to Chael Sonnen at UFC 104.
He’s since recaptured his mojo, plus much more, en route to three straight Octagon wins and a 26-5 overall record.
Silva has done fairly well for himself since their unfortunate encounter, as the Brazilian has rattled off 13 consecutive victories. He will be defending his title for the eighth time during the biggest pigskin weekend of the year.
The Gambling Gods profess Silva will be watching Super Bowl XLV with title in tow. The planet’s deadliest marksman is a 3.25-to-1 favorite to retain his belt against Belfort.
