March 29th’s Strikeforce/EliteXC event has just been dealt a serious blow as Welterweight star Jake Shields has been forced to pull out of his title bout with Drew Fickett because of a back injury according to a report on MMAWeekly. ProElite.com has also confirmed the cancellation by saying, “the bout was cancelled due to an undisclosed injury sustained by Jake Shields.”
If you didn’t remember, Shields was supposed to fight Mike Pyle in his last match for the EliteXC Welterweight title but Pyle decided to make it a three-round fight instead which prevent Shields from winning a championship belt.
The report from MMAWeekly states that Strikeforce and EliteXC are currently looking into finding a replacement for Shields, but that it may be too close to the event to find someone to get cleared by the California State Athletic Commission.
The Frank Shamrock and Cung Le bout is still scheduled as the main-event, but many MMA fans were looking forward to seeing Jake Shields take on Drew Fickett. Unfortunately those fans may have to wait until June 14th if all goes as planned.
