“WEC 53: Henderson vs. Pettis” took place Thursday night inside the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Two title scraps headlined the WEC’s final fight card. Bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz dominated Scott Jorgensen in the night’s co-main event to upgrade his 135-pound belt to UFC status.
Anthony Pettis overcame his nearly 2-to-1 underdog rating to dethrone lightweight title holder Ben Henderson in the card’s featured contest.
Pettis now gets next dibs at the winner between the UFC 125 fight between champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
While getting a shot to unify the UFC lightweight title is an astonishing accomplishment for anyone, let alone a 23-year-old, Pettis’ top contender moniker wasn’t the talk of the town. It was his Matrix-esque kick off the cage to close out his championship contest that has the MMA world buzzing.
