It appears Fedor Emelianenko is finally ready to resume his illustrious mixed martial arts career after suffering his first loss in 10 years.
MMAWeekly.com reports the heavyweight is targeted to return January 29th on a yet-to-be announced Strikeforce card against rising star Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Team Fedor and Stirkeforce are still working to extend the Russian’s stay with the San Jose, California-based MMA promotion. He has one fight remaining on his current agreement, but Emelianenko’s potential return to the circular cage is a solid indicator a contract is nearly complete.
However, the report did not outline the terms of the new agreement – assuming one is even in place.
A fight with “Bigfoot” is not as big of a draw as a tussle with current champion Alistair Overeem would be, but it would definitely put Fedor and Strikeforce back on track for the inevitable Fedor vs. Ubereem blockbuster.
Up until getting submitted by Fabricio Werdum this past June, Emelianenko had long been considered the division’s top dog. Although his aura of invincibility will never be the same, he’s vowed the upset loss was just a minor bump in the road.
Silva was most recently seen beating Andrei Arlovski and Mike Kyle, respectively. His last loss, coincidentally, also came at the hands of Werdum at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers.”
Although Strikeforce brass have yet to officially announce the event, it is believed that Nick Diaz and Jason “Mayhem” Miller will also be participating in the show.
