Jay Hieron was at a crossroads a few years back when he got into trouble with the law. He decided to go against his probation officer’s advice of staying at home and went out to Las Vegas to train with Randy Couture in an attempt to take his game to the next level. Hieron had this to say about Couture, “having a guy in your corner like that, and telling you things you really believe what he has to say and it gives you confidence.”
Hieron’s victory over Delson Heleno to win the IFL Welterweight title is no fluke. He’s been in there with some of the best, including Georges St-Pierre.
Hieron understands that MMA is a continuous learning experience, “I’m always working to get better in every area of my game, striking, wrestling, even wrestling I’ve wrestled since I was 14 and I’m still learning wrestling. Ground, you know, Mixed Martial Arts is an evolving sport, everyday there’s something new.”
Now he looks to tonight and his first challenger in Mark Miller at the IZOD Center. Miller will be a very tough test for Hieron and he must be careful because he could walk out without the title that he’s worked so hard to win.
