UFC Middleweight Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen was rumored to meet Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128 in March, however his legal issues have put that scrap on the back burner. While the chatty middleweight has remained mum on his predicament, his manager Mike Roberts issued a statement on his client’s behalf.

While some believe Octagon president Dana White abandoned Sonnen in his time of need by temporarily “freezing” his UFC contract, Roberts reiterated the two decided it would be in the best interest of everyone for Sonnen to take a brief sabbatical.

Here is what Roberts told MMAFighting:

“Chael Sonnen and the UFC have mutually decided that Chael will take some time off from his fight career to focus on the resolution of some personal issues. Chael looks forward to returning to the octagon in the near future and resuming his quest for the UFC middleweight title.”

The 33-year-old was last seen dominating Anderson Silva for four-and-a-half rounds at UFC 117. Unfortunately for Sonnen, “The Spider’s” Hail Mary was answered as he managed to pull out a submission victory.

Since putting on the performance of a lifetime in the August defeat, Sonnen has been busted for a failed drug test and has now pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering.
