After much speculation, it appears former heavyweight champ Frank Mir will indeed face Roy Nelson at UFC 130 on May 28th. Mir confirmed the matchup late Wednesday evening via his Twitter account.
“Who’s gonna watch me @UFC 130 vs @roynelsonmma,” Mir tweeted just moments ago.
Mir owns a respectable 14-5 record and has ended 11 of his wins before the final horns have sounded. Eight of those Ws came via submission.
Nelson was last seen dropping a unanimous decision loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 117. The hefty heavyweight underwent knee surgery in August and has been on the mend ever since.
“The Ultimate Fighter 10” winner was dealing with some contractual issues with a prior promoter, but Nelson was recently able to put those problems to bed.
Although the pair have never squared off in a mixed martial arts affair, they did dance at the Grappler’s Quest in 2003. Nelson got the better of Mir that November evening.
The yet-to-be announced event is expected to take place inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III is rumored to headline the pay-per-view broadcast.
Here are the athletes expected to participate in the show:
Travis Browne vs. Stefan Struve
Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story
Anthony Pettis vs. Clay Guida
Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Thiago Silva
Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar (UFC Lightweight Champion)
