In preparation of his upcoming fight at UFC 83 in Canada against former UFC Middleweight champion Rich Franklin, Travis Lutter spoke to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports and specifically about current champion Anderson Silva. Of Silva, Lutter contends, “I still think I could beat him” and, “I don’t think he’s the best 185-pounder in the world other than me.”

Is Travis Lutter crazy? Or does he have a point. He went on to say, “He looks like Superman on his feet. But his takedown defense is not that good”.

If you don’t remember, Travis Lutter won his division in “The Ultimate Fighter” Season Four which earned him the right to face Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title at UFC 67. Unfortunately for Lutter, he didn’t make weight so the fight wasn’t a title fight.

Lutter looked impressive in the first round when he took Silva down at will and actually had him in the full-mount early in the fight where he was landing some ground and pound. Silva wasn’t able to defend himself and the fight was fairly close to being stopped but Silva was able to throw his long-legs over Lutter’s shoulder and reverse himself out of it.

Silva later got Lutter into a triangle choke and started landing elbows which forced Lutter to tapout. Dehydrated from weight-cutting or not, Lutter will probably never got another shot at Anderson Silva, but he may have a point.
