“Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva” took place Saturday night inside the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. While fight fans couldn’t wait for the return of Fedor Emelianenko, it appears his loss to Antonio Silva in the opening round of the Heavyweight Grand Prix may have been the legend’s goodbye.
Unfortunately for Emelianenko, Cinderella’s glass slipper fit perfectly on “Bigfoot” in their quarterfinals matchup. After a wild opening round, Silva used his superior size advantage to plant Emelianenko on his back and batter him for the better part of the 2ndRound.
Although he managed to survive the barrage, the cage-side physician wouldn’t allow Emelianenko to enter the final round.
Game. Set. Match. Silva shocks the world and advances to the semifinals.
Following the loss, Emelianenko suggested his loss to Silva may have been his swan song.
“Something went wrong from the very beginning and I didn’t manage to readjust myself,” Emelianenko said after dropping his record to 31-3 (1 NC). “Maybe it’s the time to leave. Maybe it’s high time.
“Thank you for everything. I spent a great, beautiful, long sporting life. Maybe it’s God’s will.”

“Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva” Post-Fight Press Conference Notes:
Fedor Emelianenko did not attend the post-fight press conference. He went to the hospital to have his injuries examined. There was a rumor his right orbital bone may have been broken, but his camp claimed it was unlikely.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker and M-1 Global figurehead Vadim Finkelchtein both believed Fedor would decide to resume his illustrious career once his emotions settled.
Finkelchtein said the stoppage was the correct decision.
Antonio Silva said he ate a few hard shots, but claimed his chin was a “punch-absorber.” He also confirmed he gained 21 pounds since Friday’s weigh-ins.
While sporting his MMA promoter cap, Coker stated he still felt “very good” about the Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Also, should a replacement be required in the tournament, Coker said a Valentijn Overeem vs. Alistair Overeem showdown would be a last resort.
Coker couldn’t confirm who Gina Carano’s comeback fight will be against. No timetable has been set for her return to MMA.
