Looking Ahead to UFC 102

With UFC 101 set to pop off this weekend inside the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we wanted to take a look ahead to the UFC’s next major promotion. UFC 102 on August 29th will mark the organization’s debut in the City of Roses, and the card is stacked.

The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon will play host to an 11-bout card which will be headlined by former UFC heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Both are looking to get back on the winning track after recently losing their titles in their last Octagon outings.

Couture was dominated by current champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 91. It was his first fight back after his year-long contract dispute with the UFC. Nobody is sure how much the 46-year-old still has left in the tank, but if anyone can, Captain America can!

Big Nog looked slow and sluggish when he lost his interim belt to Frank Mir just one month later at UFC 92. It was rumored that Nog had suffered a staph infection just weeks before showtime and that is what caused him to look sluggish.

In addition to the overdue match-up between the two MMA legends, Damian Maia and Nate Marquardt will battle it out to determine who is next in line behind Dan Henderson for a shot at Anderson Silva’s 185-pound strap.

This middleweight tango was initially slated as a top contender bout, however after recent changes to the UFC’s middleweight landscape, Henderson was able to leapfrog himself immediately into another title fight after putting Michael Bisping to bed at UFC 100.

Here is the complete roster slated to fight inside the Rose Garden:

Preliminary Bouts:

Matt Veach vs. Evan Dunham
Nick Catone vs. Mark Munoz
Tim Hague Vs. Todd Duffee
Justin McCully vs. Mike Russow
Wilson Gouveia vs James Irvin
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Chris Tuchscherer

Main Bouts:

Chris Leben vs. Jake Roshol
Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Brandon Vera
Nate Marquardt vs. Damian Maia
Thiago Silva vs. Keith Jardine
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Randy Couture
