There’s a saying in professional sports that, ‘The numbers don’t lie.’ Or do they? Diego Sanchez won his second straight fight inside the Octagon at “UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann,” but the stats tell a completely different story.

FightMetric has quickly compiled a statistical breakdown of Sanchez’s spectacular battle with Martin Kampmann on Thursday night.

According to the numbers, Kampmann outstruck “The Dream” 79-51 in total strikes, including a lopsided 73-41 in shots to the head. Speaking of faces, by the time the referee raised his hand in victory, Sanchez’s mug made even Josh Koscheck quiver.

Another interesting fact from the report was Kampmann’s success in stuffing Diego’s takedown attempts. Sanchez was successful only once in his 15 takedown opportunities. However, the one he landed in the final round possibly made the difference in his highly controversial unanimous decision victory.

The momentum in the bout changed midway through the 2ndRound when cuts around Kampmann’s right eye caused the Dane to alter his gameplan.

Sanchez used his newfound momentum to push forward with a series of flurries, which Kampmann claims should’ve have been enough to alter the outcome.

At the end of the day, the one thing the number crunchers couldn’t measure was Sanchez’s undying heart. Despite his severely battered face, the former “The Ultimate Fighter 1″ winner refused to stop barreling on.

Here is the official box score from “Sanchez vs. Kampmann”:
