“UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones” took place Saturday night inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Jon Jones dominated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to capture the light heavyweight title in the card’s featured contest.

Brendan Schaub vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic

1stRound: Schaub comes out fast, but doesn’t land on much. They clinch against the cage and Schaub gets warned for a punch to the back of the head. Schaub gets a takedown in the center of cage. The youngster rains down some vicious G’nP. CC sweeps and gets the fight back up. Not much action as the round ends. 10-9, Schaub.   

2ndRound: CC kinda connects with the head kick fans were waiting for, he ends up on his back for his efforts. CC gets warned for an illegal kick while Schaub was still down, he threw a similar strike in the opening round. A lot of clinching against the cage, not much connecting but both are very active. Schaub is bleeding badly from his nose. Schaub gets a point deducted for punch to back of head. Because of point deduction, 9-9.

3rdRound: CC accidentally kicks Schaub in the groin to start round. No warning or point deducted. Schaub gets a takedown, but CC gets up immediately. Schaub goes on the attack and secured another TD. Schaub passes to half-guard, but CC is able to wiggle free. SCHAUB FLOORS CC WITH A RIGHT. IT’S OVER!!!

Dan Miller vs. Nate Marquardt

1stRound: Miller relentless in his takedown attempt and finally gets Nate down. Miller goes for a guillotine but Nate is able to get free. Nate is trying to attack from inside Miller’s full guard, but Miller is really active off his back. Herb Dean stands the fight up. Nate picks Miller up and slams him to the canvas. Marquardt 10-9.

2ndRound: Nate connects with a one-two, then a kick to the face to boot (no pun intended). Nate misses with a big right, he looks a lot more aggressive than in prior fights. Nate attempts flying knee and gets taken down. The middleweights are down to throw leather, that’s for sure. Nate lands a right and follows up with a takedown. Miller goes for another guillotine, but Nate escapes. Marquardt 10-9.

3rdRound: Miller eats a right to open the final round. Not much action, as Nate stuffs Miller’s takedown. Nate swings around and lands him Millers full guard. Forgettable round, Marquardt 30-27.

Kamal Shalorus vs. Jim Miller

1stRound: They are swinging for the fences to start the fight, as ‘USA’ chants ring throughout the arena. Miller lands a head kick. Miller tries a guillotine but Shalorus ends up in top position. Not much G’nP, so ref stands fighters up. Shalorus connects with a right hook. Close round to score, 10-9 Miller.

2ndRound: Fast and furious action to start the second, but not much lands. Miller is getting the better of the exchanges, though. Miller fails on a flying triangle while in the clinch. They scramble on the canvas and Miller quickly takes his back. Miller has a body lock with three minutes left in the round, Shalorus is in trouble but fending off fairly well. Shalorus survives, but down 20-18 on our unofficial cards.

3rdRound: Sparring session to start the final stanza. Shalorus eats a nasty upper-cut and pours it on. Follows up with a knee and a vicious barrage on the ground. OVER!

Urijah Faber vs. Eddie Wineland

1stRound: Faber ties him up immediately, but Wineland is able to press him against the cage. Wineland lands a big shot as they separate. Wineland takes Faber’s back and slams him down briefly. Faber connects on a couple of shots, but is getting denied on countless takedown attempts. Wineland lands a right, but Faber counters with two back. Wineland 10-9.

2ndRound: Faber having a tough time closing the distance, but finally gets Wineland to the mat. Faber finally gets the fight where he wants it and takes advantage with some G’nP. Wineland tries to scramble, but Faber ain’t having it. Wineland eats a couple of short elbows and some more shots. Faber 10-9.

3rdRound: Faber going for a takedown, but can’t secure the takedown. Faber connects on an uppercut and is starting to unload. Wineland isn’t dazed, but is clearly the slower of the two fighters. Faber finally gets the takedown, likely securing the W. Faber 10-9.

Result: Urijah Faber Defeated Eddie Wineland via Unanimous Decision (29-28, All Three Judges)

Jon Jones vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (UFC Light Heavyweight Champion)

1stRound: Jones comes out with a flying knee to start things, then a couple of more unorthodox strikes. Jones gets him to the canvas in under a minute. Shogun is active off his back but eats an elbow for his efforts. Shogun attempts to sweep, but Jones is far too big to throw off. Jones living up to the hype once again. Shogun gets back up, but is taking a major beating. Shogun looks like he’s out on his feet. 10-9 Jones.

2ndRound: Shogun breathing heavy between rounds, Jones looks calm and cool. Jones lands a spinning-back elbow, but Shogun marches forward. Jones using an open-palm as his “left jab.” Jones takes him down in the center of the Octagon, but nothing too damaging is being unleashed. Jones attempts a knee bar as the horn blares. Jones cruises for another 10-9.

3rdRound: Jones attempts a head kick, but Shogun tries for another leg lock. Jones wiggles free and advances to side control. Jones giving him the business from inside Shogun’s full guard. Jones is UNLOADING NOW. SHOGUN’S FACE IS BUSTED, A LA DIEGO SANCHEZ. IT’S OVER, Shogun taps from strikes! The Jon Jones era has begun.
