Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez put his title on the line against Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri in the co-main event of “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley.” The Cesar Gracie trained fighter didn’t disappoint.
“El Nino” battered his challenger with better boxing, devastating muay-thai and fight ending elbows. It was clear from the outset that Kawajiri was just outmatched, as the champ was fighting with a chip on his shoulder.
“I’ll tell you what I think it’s time we unify some titles,” an emotional Melendez said following the win. “Who wants to see me fight for that UFC title, lets unify it in my hexagon. I’m the number one lightweight in the world. I’m coming for the spot.”
