Strikeforce’s signing spree continues as the promotion has added Jiu-Jitsu ace Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza to its middleweight division. “Jacare” has competed against Strikeforce middleweight Gegard Mousasi and has defeated both Jason Miller and Zelg Galesic. According to a press release, Souza has signed a multi-fight contract.
“I am very excited that I will have the opportunity to fight in STRIKEFORCE amongst many of the world’s best middleweight fighters,” Souza said following his signing.
Souza, who took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the age of 17, fought UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture to a draw in a grappling contest in 2006 and, shortly thereafter, began training at Xtreme Couture.
He holds an impressive 10-2 pro record, with nine of his wins coming via submission.
Souza’s nickname, “Jacare,” is Portuguese for the species of alligator that inhabit Manaus, the town in Brazil where he was born.
There’s going to be plenty of fish for this alligator to prey on with Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Robbie Lawler, Cung Le, Jake Shields, Mousasi and others as potential opponents down the road.
This is the second big signing for Strikeforce this week, as it was previously announced that WAMMA heavyweight champion FedorEmelianenko had also signed a multi-fight contract with the promotion.
It is currently unknown as to when Souza will make his Strikeforce debut.
