With only 38 days remaining until the curtain is drawn on “UFC 130: Edgar vs. Maynard III,” Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson has agreed to step for injured Brad Pickett to face Miguel Torres in the May 28th event.
“The fastest man in the division has answered the call, and Demetrious Johnson will move into Pickett’s spot to face the former divisional kingpin,” said UFC president Dana White. “Both men have verbally agreed to the fight.”
Torres was riding a 17-fight winning streak prior to losing his title to Brian Bowles in 2009. He followed that up with a loss to Joseph Benavidez, but Torres appears to have recaptured his mojo of late. He’s won two straight bouts, including a decision victory over Antonio Banuelos at UFC 126.
Speaking of making a splash in their UFC debut, Johnson took posted a unanimous decision win over Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto that same February evening in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Johnson was originally slated to face Renan Barao on the same card. The organization will announce Barao’s new opponent within the coming days.
UFC 130 takes place inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pay-per-view broadcast features a lightweight title fight between champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
