In July of 2012, Cristina Servin will make an honest man out of Tony Ferguson when the couple march down the happily ever after aisle. On Saturday night after winning “The Ultimate Fighter 13” tournament, Ferguson discovered the UFC would indirectly flip the bill for their upcoming wedding.
“El Cucuy” not only secured his future with the world’s premier MMA promotion by earning a six-figure contract, but his devastating KO of Ramsey Nijem also won him an extra $40,000 and ‘Knockout of the Night’ honors. It was an unexpected bonus that will come in awfully handy as they prepare for the rest of their lives.
“This is a great start for us,” Servin told 5thRound. “Obviously, with this it sets our future. It makes things a lot easier, I couldn’t ask for anything else.
“I was so happy for him. I was trying to be a lady because I was wearing a dress, but that didn’t work. I jumped up like a little kid. I’m so proud of him, he deserves it.”
Just hours before he took center stage for the biggest scrap of his life, Ferguson was killing time by tidying up his hotel room and folding countless articles of clothing. While those pre-fight rituals might seem odd to most fans, it’s a common occurrence for the 27-year-old.
Unfortunately for Ferguson, he still had the jitters as he was set to walk down the aisle. Thank God for those UFC hype videos.
“The one thing that got me pumped up, I was real nervous before, but I saw the TV screen [on my way to the cage] and it showed the highlight of me back at home in Ventura and I saw myself and my girl walking in the sand,” Ferguson shared. “I just got emotional … I hit myself in the head a couple of times and said, ‘This is why you are here. This is what you are supposed to be doing. You’ve got to be the best that you can, you’ve got to provide for your family.’”
Fast forward three minutes and 54 seconds and a new TUF champion was crowned. With the future at his fingertips and his fiancée by his side, Ferguson is fully prepared for the challenges that lie ahead – both inside and outside of the Octagon.
As soon as our interview wrapped, Tony and Cristina shared a warm embrace and expressed their undying love for each other.
“We’ve got the wedding paid for,” Ferguson told his bride-to-be.
A match made in heaven.
