It appears Jon Jones will resume his skyrocketing MMA career September 24th in Denver, Colorado. Last Friday, the reigning UFC light heavyweight champ tweeted he couldn’t wait to compete in the same upcoming pay-per-view event as fellow Jackson Submission Fighting teammate Diego Sanchez.
“@DiegoSanchez505 honored to be on the same card as you.. Time to earn it again baby!! #Earnit,” Jones posted.
Sanchez promptly re-tweeted his buddy’s message and promised Team Jackson would represent come game time. Unfortunately for fanboys, “Dream” didn’t reveal exactly when their Octagon return would be … until late Monday night.
“Fighting in Denver sept 24… Mark your calendars!” Sanchez wrote on his Twitter.
Sanchez faces UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes in a welterweight affair, while former light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will mark Jones’ first title defense. For those wondering if Rampage’s “fractured” left hand will prevent fans from witnessing some more black-on-black crime, Jones confirmed the scrap last week with MMAJunkie.
“I’ll be fighting Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson next,” Jones stated. “I’m not allowed to discuss the date because I didn’t sign a contract, but yeah, it will be very soon.”
Too bad, it seems Diego may have let the cat out of the proverbial bag.
The yet-to-be announced show is expected to take place inside Denver’s Pepsi Center. The card will likely be dubbed UFC 135.
UFC president Dana White previously stated Lyoto Machida will play substitute if Rampage can’t answer the bell.
(UPDATED 6/9/11 at 2:32PM PT):
Dana White confirmed ‘Jones vs. Rampage’ after today’s UFC 131 pre-fight press conference. However, Jones’ hand, not Rampage’s, needs to be cleared by a physician before things become official.
