American Top Team fighter Brian Bowles did what nobody thought he could, beat Miguel Torres and capture the WEC bantamweight title at WEC 42. Bowles stunned Torres at the outset of the fight by dropping him but Torres was able to quickly recover, unfortunately he couldn’t do it a second time.
Torres has always been highly regarded for his all-around MMA game, more specifically his technical striking, but it was Bowles’ power that proved to be the deciding factor.
Bowles was on his heels, but was able to catch Torres coming in too aggressively and dropped him with a quick right and followed up with another right and then a flurry of lefts that had Torres wondering where he was.
It took a few minutes for Torres to actually wake up from the barrage of strikes that Bowles had unleashed on him and just like that the WEC crowned a new champion while a 17-fight win streak went out the window in only 3:57 of the 1stRound.
Unless an immediate re-match is granted, it looks like Bowles will be defending this title against Dominick Cruz, who outpointed Joseph Benavidez to improve to 14-1 while dropping Benavidez to 10-1.
