In an attempt to get everyone’s minds off of another welterweight that’s been hoarding the MMA headlines, the UFC has announced a pivotal 170-pound scrap between Jake Shields and Jake Ellenberger will headline “UFC Fight Night 25: Battle on the Bayou” on September 17th.
The company confirmed the bout via Twitter late Tuesday afternoon.
Shields is looking to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to welterweight king Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129. The April loss snapped the grappler’s impressive 15-fight winning streak, a run that started back in November of 2005.
Ellenberger has made no bones about his dislike for Shields, and after countless call-outs he’s finally been granted his wish. The 26-year-old owns an underrated 25-5 record and has rattled off eight wins in his last nine outings. He was previously seen breaking his left hand on Sean Pierson’s face en route to earning a knockout victory on the same UFC 129 show.
“UFC Fight Night 25: Battle on the Bayou” is expected to take place inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
Spike TV will broadcast the main bouts live starting at 9PM ET/6PM PT.
Here are the athletes expected to appear in the freebie fight card:
Alan Belcher vs. Jason MacDonald
Jonathan Brookins vs. Erik Koch
Court McGee vs. Dongi Yang
Jake Shields vs. Jake Ellenberger
