Last Wednesday, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante received the ultimate birthday present when Strikeforce issued him his next assignment. Instead of popping bottles at the club to celebrate his 28 years on earth, JZ was pounding heavy bags with his Blackzilian brethren in preparation for Lyle Beerbohm.
“That’s the best celebration I can have, go back to the gym and train hard,” Cavalcante told 5thRound. “That’s what I needed. It was good for me.”
Fine. So his fiesta was nothing that would put any of the My Super Sweet 16 kids on MTV to shame, but the lightweight loves what he does and does exactly what he loves. Courtesy of a quick turnaround from last month’s ‘No Contest’ against Justin Wilcox, JZ had the luxury of starting off his camp for Beerbohm in prime condition.
In fact, he had to momentarily pump the breaks to ensure he wasn’t overexerting himself too much.
“I’m just keeping the work I was doing [prior to the Wilcox fight], but I took it slow a little bit so I don’t over train,” JZ shared. “Realistically, I train all year round. I’m not the kind of guy to just train when I have a fight. I train every day.
“Training for me is not like medicine, you know, when you take when you’re sick or if you have something. Training for me, it’s something that I need. It’s like breathing, it’s like food. I gotta train every day and keep evolving.”
Cavalcante’s official party jumps off July 30th inside the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. I’m not quite sure who will be hosting his after party, but knowing JZ, the local gyms better be open late.
