Earlier Friday, Josh Gross of SI.com was reporting that some new matches were on the horizon for the “Affliction: Banned” card, which will take place at the Honda Center (formerly the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim) in Anaheim, California on July 19th. These reports were later confirmed Friday afternoon by Affliction Clothing’s Vice President, Tom Attencio. Attencio made the announcement of the event on Friday’s edition of Inside MMA, which will be airing on HDNet tonight at 9:30PM EST. However, there are still a few obstacles that need to be ironed out.
The card and venue are starting to take shape, but California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Armando Garcia is quick to point out that they don’t want to run into the same problems that they did with FEG last year.
After what took place last year with K-1 Dynamite!! USA, Garcia now requires that promoters have a bond that covers at least double of what the fighters’ salaries accumulate to. Affliction has made it clear that they have the financial backing to make the event happen, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
On top of that, both Tim Sylvia and Josh Barnett must pass CSAC supervised urine tests since both of them have tested positive for steroids in the past.
Rumors are swirling that Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Mike Whitehead has been added to the card, as well as Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao. There are also rumors that Ben Rothwell may be scheduled to fight Andrei Arlovski, but those rumors couldn’t be confirmed at this point in time. Remember that all of this is on top of a main-event which features Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia.
