As most of the America was busy sleeping, the world’s biggest MMA promotion continued cranking out spectacular scraps. While Friday was dominated with countless UFC 136 fight announcements, they kicked off their Saturday by confirming BJ Penn and Carlos Condit would co-headline UFC 137 on October 29th.
“This is a fight the fans want and a fight that brings me closer to a shot at the title. I couldn’t be happier,” Penn stated on his website.
After UFC matchmaker Joe Silva vetoed Penn’s rematch with Jon Fitch due to “lack of interest,” Condit pounced on the opportunity to stand opposite the former multi-divisional champ and petitioned for a tango on Twitter.
Penn and Fitch fought to a highly controversial draw at UFC 127 this past February. It was the Hawaiian’s second welterweight contest since getting trounced in back-to-back outings by reigning lightweight king Frankie Edgar.
Condit became one of the hottest names in the weight class after shoving his knee in Dong Hyun Kim’s face earlier this month at UFC 132. The former WEC champion has won 12 of his last 13 contests and is currently enjoying a four-fight winning streak.
With fellow welterweight studs Jake Shields and Jake Ellenberger slated to headline “UFC Fight Night 25: Battle on the Bayou,” it’s unclear where this move leaves Jon Fitch.
UFC 137 takes place inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Georges St-Pierre puts his 170-pound crown on the line against former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in the card’s featured attraction.
