The injury bug came swooping through The City of Brotherly Love and did a major number to UFC 133‘s fight card. After a vicious attack that resulted in the exit of four light heavyweights from its roster, the 11-bout lineup for the August 6th show is once again complete.
Phil Davis was slated to headline the pay-per-view opposite Rashad Evans, but the undefeated 205-pounder was abruptly forced out last Monday with a knee injury. Davis’ exile quickly ignited some of the most intriguing 72 hours in MMA history.
Tito Ortiz initially stated he wouldn’t be able to answer the bell, then pulled the ultimate switcheroo the following day. Prior to that, fellow former light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida promised UFC president Dana White he would step up on short-notice. When White called back to confirm the tango, Machida’s camp unexpectedly demanded “Anderson Silva money” to fight in Philly.
A day after all that drama unfolded, light heavyweight Vladimir Matyushenko withdrew with a injury of his own. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was nixed on Saturday, and because there was only 21 days until showtime, opponent Rich Franklin was subsequently shelved for another day.
“UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz” takes place August 6th inside the The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
