As expected, Strikeforce confirmed they will be hosting a major event on September 10th. Unfortunately for fight fans, the UFC’s little brother didn’t announce where the extravaganza would take place. More importantly, a slew of scraps were reported for the show, but the Heavyweight Grand Prix was not.
It’s been long-rumored the company would host the tournament’s semifinals on the card, but superstar Alistair Overeem revealed today on The MMA Hour he wasn’t going to be ready until October. His status for the tourney is in limbo, as he claims Zuffa, LLC threatened to eliminate him from the HWGP if he didn’t accept the September appointment.
In other news, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will defend his middleweight crown against Luke Rockhold in the event. Depending upon how the Grand Prix drama plays out, it’s possible the 185-pounders could headline the Showtime broadcast.
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Roger Gracie, Maximo Blanco vs. Josh Thomson and Jordan Mein vs. Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos were also added to the lineup.
Although Dream light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi just competed this past Saturday in Japan, it’s rumored he’ll meet Mike Kyle in the star-studded card.
No word on when Strikeforce intends to announce which arena will host the festivities.
