As expected, the semifinals of Strikeforce’s Alistair Overeem-less Heavyweight Grand Prix will take place September 10th inside the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed the news late Friday night.
Overeem was abruptly yanked from the tournament after it was determined his pinky-toe would prevent him from answering the bell. “Ubereem” was the favorite to take the tourney.
Alternate Daniel Cormier was quickly called up from the bullpen to serve as a substitute. The former All-American wrestler meets Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in one semifinals pairing, while prior UFC champion Josh Barnett looks to advance to the finals against Sergei Kharitonov.
Also appearing in the extravaganza is a middleweight title scrap between champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Luke Rockhold.
Showtime will broadcast the main card starting at 10PM ET/PT.
Here are the athletes slated to appear in the event:
Jordan Mein vs. Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos
Maximo Blanco vs. Josh Thomson
Mike Kyle vs. Gegard Mousasi
Roger Gracie vs. Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal
Luke Rockhold vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (Strikeforce Middleweight Champion)
