Late Thursday evening, UFC president Dana White announced former WEC featherweight king Urijah Faber and prior WEC bantamweight champ Brian Bowles will meet at “UFC 139: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos.”
“Before a possible trilogy can be considered between Urijah Faber and his rival, champion Dominick Cruz, he will take on one of the division’s truly elite fighters, former bantamweight champion Brian Bowles,” said White. “A win over Faber would be massive for Bowles’ bid to challenge for the belt that was once his. The stakes are high and the fight will be intense.”
Faber dropped a unanimous decision loss to 135-pound UFC champion Dominick Cruz earlier this month at UFC 132. After blasting out of the MMA gates with an impressive 21-1 record, “The California Kid” has only won half of his last eight contests.
Bowles holds a 10-1 professional mark, with his sole blemish coming against Cruz in March 2006. Bowles broke his right hand in the scrap’s opening ticks, but managed to warrior through until the doctor put an end to the title bout before it could reach the 3rdRound.
The yet-to-be announced show is expected to take place November 19th inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. A heavyweight title tilt between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will headline the pay-per-view broadcast.
Here are the fighters rumored to appear in UFC 139:
Josh Koscheck vs. TBD
Chris Weidman vs. Tom Lawlor
Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles
Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez (UFC Heavyweight Champion)
