Tompkins was in Canada helping longtime protégé Chris Horodecki prepare for his September 10th bout at the time of his death. The 37-year-old passed away in his sleep on Sunday morning.
An autopsy is pending.
During his career that spanned more than two decades, Tompkins coached 15 champions in six different weight classes, including Vitor Belfort, Randy Couture and Wanderlei Silva. He took particular interest in cultivating the sport’s rising stars, such as Sam Stout, Mark Hominick and Horodecki.
Tomkins served as Hominick’s Best Man at his wedding in 2009 and was married to Stout’s sister, Emilie.
