Early Wednesday morning, the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion added a thrilling welterweight shootout between Martin Kampmann and Rick Story to their UFC 139 roster. The event takes place November 19th inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
Kampmann holds a respectable 17-5 record, but currently finds himself on the wrong end of a two-fight streak. The slugger was last seen dropping a unanimous decision loss to Diego Sanchez this past March.
It’s possible Kampmann could be fighting for his UFC career, as three straight losses typically signals a trip to the unemployment line. However, fellow 170-pounder Dan Hardy was granted yet another reprieve after dropping his fourth consecutive defeat this past weekend.
Story owns a 13-4 record and posted a disappointing unanimous decision loss of his own in his last Octagon foray. “Horror” was slated to headlined “UFC on Versus 4” opposite Nate Marquardt, but ended up facing Charlie Brenneman at the 11th hour when Marquardt failed his pre-fight medicals the day before showtime.
Story was coming off the biggest W of his career when he hung a lopsided decision victory over Thiago Alves just one month prior at UFC 130.
A heavyweight title bout between champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos is expected to headline the pay-per-view broadcast.
Here are the athletes rumored to appear in the show:
Josh Koscheck vs. TBD
Gleison Tibau vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
Zhang Tie Quan vs. Darren Elkins
Chris Weidman vs. Tom Lawlor
Rick Story vs. Martin Kampmann
Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles
Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez (UFC Heavyweight Champion)
