It’s been over five years since Yushin Okami posted a controversial disqualification win over Anderson Silva at “Rumble on the Rock 8.” Much has changed for both middleweights since their initial meeting, with Okami becoming “the best fighter to ever come from Japan,” while Silva has emerged as the baddest 185-pounder to ever compete in mixed martial arts.
Okami was penciled in for a UFC 90 title fight against Silva in January of 2006. Unfortunately for “Thunder,” he was stung by the injury bug prior to showtime and was forced to withdraw with a broken hand. He posted an uneventful unanimous decision win over Dean Lister in his comeback fight, then lost a critical contest to Chael Sonnen at UFC 104.
He’s since recaptured his mojo, plus much more, en route to three straight Octagon wins and a 26-5 overall record.
Silva has also done fairly well for himself since their unfortunate encounter, as the Brazilian has rattled off 14 consecutive victories. He will be looking to collect his ninth successful title defense tomorrow at UFC 134.
