Jake Shields (Pictured) will fight Jake Ellenberger with a heavy heart at “UFC Fight Night 25: Battle on the Bayou.” Despite the passing of his father on Tuesday, multiple outlets have confirmed Shields will remain in the September 17th event.
Jack Shields died peacefully in his sleep yesterday morning. The 67-year-old was instrumental in his son’s MMA career, teaching him the values of hard work and perseverance.
“lost my father manager and one of my best friends today!! R.I.P jack you will be greatly missed and loved by many,” Jake posted on his Facebook page.
While the exact cause of death is unknown, Jack was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2010.
Shields and Ellenberger will headline the Spike TV broadcast, which takes place inside the Ernest N. Morial Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Although there has been bad blood between the welterweights, the ever-classy Ellenberger immediately took to his Twitter to express his sympathies.
“I’m sorry to hear that. My condolences to Jake Shields and his family,” Ellenberger posted.
