During Friday’s media conference call, UFC president Dana White announced the heavyweight title tilt between champ Cain Velasquez (Pictured) and Junior dos Santos that was expected to headline UFC 139 will now serve as the featured attraction for the organization’s debut on FOX.
Tickets for UFC 139 haven’t gone on sale and the 265-pound championship affair was never OFFICIALLY announced for the November 19th show.
UFC on FOX takes place November 12th inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The Octagon’s hour-long primetime premiere airs live at 9PM ET/6PM PT.
It was believed the UFC’s first show on FOX would feature two bouts, but the five-round battle will serve as the only live scrap showcased during the 60-minute broadcast. If the contest ends early, they will fill in with replays of the night’s prior fights or a “best of” highlights package from the card’s earlier action.
Velasquez has been sitting the sidelines since mauling Brock Lesnar last October to capture the crown. The champion owns a perfect 9-0 record, finishing off all but one of his victims before the final horns have sounded.
After humbling the former WWE superstar, Velasquez underwent surgery to repair a torn right rotator cuff sustained during the contest. He has been riding the pine since January’s operation.
Dos Santos solidified his top contender status with a resounding victory over former interim champ Shane Carwin at UFC 131. The Brazilian bumped his record to a dominant 13-1 mark following the lopsided win.
Here are the bouts confirmed for UFC on FOX:
Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza
Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez (UFC Heavyweight Champion)
