When you have a nickname like “The New York Bad Ass,” you’re asking for attention. Fortunately for people like us, every line that comes out of Phil Baroni’s mouth is gold. He made his feelings clear at the EliteXC press conference about his upcoming opponent, Joey Villasenor. “I’m going to hurt this kid real bad. He’s got a big mouth and I’m gonna shut it. I’m gonna shut it permanently,” said Baroni.
If you want to compare Baroni to another professional athlete, the closest comparison you can make is Charles Barkley. The guy says anything he wants and makes it funny, but he has an edge to him.
Villasenor certainly owns an impressive 25-6-0 record heading into the fight, but he has come up short in many of his big fights. He has losses to Ryo Chonan, Robbie Lawler, and Murilo Rua.
Baroni on the other hand sports a 10-9-0 record and is coming off of back-to-back loses. Both Baroni and Villasenor have serious knockout power and many don’t expect this fight to last very long.
When asked how he thinks the fight is going to go, Baroni said, “What is to say you know? I’m gonna knock this kid out. I’m gonna knock him out in my hometown. He had a lot to say about East Coast fighters and it’s basically going to be a turf war and I’m gonna send him back to New Mexico in a body bag.”
Baroni finished up his classic commentary by clarifying why Villasenor didn’t attend the press conference. “He’s not here. He didn’t show up. I guess he had a little vaginitis or something.”
I guess we’ll have to wait until May 31st.
