And then there were four, as in only four contestants remaining in Bellator’s Welterweight Tournament. Saturday night at “Bellator 49,” eight athletes battled inside the Caesars in Atlantic City, New Jersey to earn a shot at the title.
“The final four in this tournament are hugely talented fighters and any one of the four could win this whole thing,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated following last night’s event. “The Lozano-Weedman fight was really spectacular and Saunders looked great as well. I can’t wait to see these guys back in the cage.”
Now that the dust has settled on their scraps, the pairings for the tourney’s second round have been released. Former UFC star Ben Saunders (Pictured) faces veteran Luis Santos in one semifinal matchup, while Chris Lozano fights Douglas Lima on the other end of the brackets.
The welterweight competition resumes at “Bellator 53” on October 8th. A location to host the shindig has yet to be determined.
The tournament winner advances to challenge either reigning Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren or his impending opponent, Jay Hieron, for the crown.
Here is the lineup for Bellator 53:
Ben Saunders vs. Luis Santos
Chris Lozano vs. Douglas Lima
