Fighting for the UFC has been on Cung Le’s to do list since starting his MMA career almost five years ago. With the blessing of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, Le will finally make his Octagon debut at UFC 139 when he’s welcomed to the big show by former champ Vitor Belfort.
“I’ve always wanted to fight in the UFC, but my loyalty was with Scott Coker and Strikeforce. Since Scott sold the company to UFC, he actually gave me his blessing,” Le stated while appearing on TapouT Radio.
Some believed the Vietnamese fighter had moved onto the entertainment industry following his knockout win over Scott Smith in June of 2010, but Le wasn’t ready to call it quits quite yet.
“I want to look back and say ‘Wow, I did everything that I could do.’ Now that I look back, I never got a chance to fight in the UFC,” the former Strikeforce middleweight champion admitted.
Le’s still going to act when the right opportunity arises, but his focus now has shifted to his UFC premiere.
“Right now my focus is on Vitor and UFC 139,” Le stated. “The great thing is that at the UFC Summit I talked to [UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta] and [UFC president Dana White], and Lorenzo actually said that he’d work around my schedule.
“They had the same attitude when I was in the office a couple of weeks ago. They were excited to bring me on and I’m excited to be part of UFC.”
Even though he only has eight professional MMA bouts under his belt, Le has spent countless hours training with some of the world’s best at the American Kickboxing Academy. Now that his UFC contract is finally signed, the 39-year-old is ready to prove his mettle.
“I definitely guarantee that I’m coming to fight,” Le said in closing.
UFC 139 takes place on November 19th inside the HP Pavilion in Le’s backyard of San Jose, California.
