If Nick Diaz (Pictured) was serious about wanting to upgrade his rickety old Honda, then he certainly missed the money train by skipping back-to-back flights to promote his UFC 137 title bout against welterweight king Georges St-Pierre.
According to Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer (via MixedMartialArts.com), Diaz was set to score a percentage of the pay-per-view buys his October 29th fight with GSP generated. Considering the card was stockpiled with countless superstars, including their ‘Champion vs. Champion’ shootout, early estimates suggest Mr. 209 lost out on a seven-figure payday.
Now that Diaz has been demoted to the show’s co-featured attraction against BJ Penn, the controversial grappler is no longer eligible for a piece of the PPV pie. He is expected to earn slightly more than if he would have stayed with Strikeforce to defend his belt against Tyron Woodley.
Diaz pocketed a flat $175,000 salary in his final fight for the UFC’s little brother in April.
After putting Paul Daley down in thrilling fashion, Diaz expressed great displeasure in the lack of zeros in his paycheck. In search of greener pastures, he abandoned his Strikeforce belt to swim in St-Pierre’s pond. The primary disclaimer in his new UFC deal was that he needed to “play the game.”
Unfortunately for Diaz, he decided to ignore the bold print on his contract and no-showed on consecutive “beauty pageants.” St-Pierre now defends his throne against Carlos Condit, who is expected to benefit from Diaz’s financial mishap.
UFC 137 takes place inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
