On Tuesday morning, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney reported lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (Pictured) has suffered an undisclosed injury. Alvarez was slated to defend his crown at Bellator 54 against Season 4 Lightweight Tournament winner Michael Chandler.
“Eddie suffered an injury that will keep him out of our October 15th show at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City,” said Rebney. “Eddie Alvarez has a huge heart and if there was any way for him to fight on the 15th, I know he would. Ed’s in spectacular condition, so both of us are hopeful that this fight can potentially still occur later this fall.”
The extent of Alvarez’s injury will determine when the championship affair will be rescheduled. The company is hopeful that it can still take place later this season.
Alvarez, considered by some as the best 155-pounder not competing in the UFC, captured the crown by submitting Toby Imada in June 2009. Alvarez has won 12 of his last 13 scraps, including seven straight.
Bellator 54 takes place inside the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The card features the semifinals of Bellator’s Middleweight Tournament.
