Rashad Evans, step aside. Although “Suga” has been the light heavyweight top contender for quite some time, Lyoto Machida will get next dibs at Jon Jones’ (Pictured) title. On Thursday morning, UFC president Dana White announced Jones and Machida will headline UFC 140 on December 10th.
“Alright Toronto!!! Dec 10th UFC 140 tix go on sale next weekend and ur main event is Bones Jones vs Machida!!!” White tweeted just moments ago.
Jones owns a nearly flawless 14-1 professional resume, with his lone blemish coming in a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill in December 2009. Since the defeat, “Bones” has rattled off five consecutive convincing victories en route to capturing the crown.
This will mark the 24-year-old’s fourth fight of 2011 and his second scrap in less than three months. Jones also accepted his title fight against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in March on just 28-days notice.
Many believed Machida found himself in White’s doghouse after he accepted to face Evans at UFC 133, only to turn around and request “Anderson Silva money” to fight in Philly. Clearly, “The Dragon” never fell out of White’s good graces.
Machida holds an impressive 17-2 professional record and was last seen retiring Randy Couture with a Steven Seagal-inspired front kick at UFC 129 in April.
Evans underwent surgery on his right hand following his August win over Tito Ortiz. Evans had the pins removed from his haymaker on Wednesday, but isn’t allowed to begin training for three weeks.
The Air Canada Centre in Toronto will host UFC 140.
