The UFC has officially announced their UFC 104 event on October 24th in Los Angeles, California will be headlined Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s first-ever title fight against newly-crowned champ Lyoto Machida. The promotion also confirmed the co-main event clash between heavyweights Ben Rothwell and Cain Velasquez.
UFC fans got a taste of Shogun’s skills when he went circa 2005 in his last outing as he knocked out former UFC champ Chuck Liddell at UFC 97. Just a few years back during his run with PrideFC, the 27-year-old was considered the world’s best 205-pound fighter, however two devastating knee surgeries have left him scrambling to recapture his mojo.
Machida will not only be putting his strap up for grabs for the first time, but also his perfect 15-0 professional record. MMA’s most elusive fighter finally realized that simply posting W’s inside the Octagon wasn’t enough. He needed to be an exciting finisher if he wanted to be considered the class of the division.
Enter “The Dragon” as Machida has posted two consecutive KO victories en route to capturing the crown, silencing all of his critics in the process.
The event marks the UFC’s first promotion in L.A. since UFC 60 back in May of 2006. That night was headlined by the Octagon return of mixed martial arts pioneer Royce Gracie as he took on then-welterweight champ Matt Hughes in a non-title affair.
Hughes easily took a 1stRound TKO over the legend in front of 14,765 screaming fans.
Tickets for the Staples Center show will be available beginning August 27th for UFC Fight Club members and the following day for UFC.com newsletter subscribers. The general public gains access on the 29th. Tickets go on sale each day at 1PM ET/10AM PT through Ticketmaster.
