Nick Diaz Takes Scenic Route to UFC 137 Main Event

In one fell swoop, former Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz (Pictured) is right back where he was supposed to be all along – headlining UFC 137 on October 29th. Oh, the irony.

Of course the only difference is he won’t be challenging UFC champion Georges St-Pierre for his crown, or pocketing a reported seven-figure paycheck in order to upgrade his Honda, but a pivotal main event scrap against BJ Penn should still prove to be explosive.

After vacating his Strikeforce crown to swim in GSP’s pond, Diaz refused to “play the game” and help promote their much-anticipated pay-per-view broadcast. Mr. 209 subsequently ditched consecutive pre-fight press conferences and watched the opportunity of a lifetime get yanked right out from underneath his feet.

Carlos Condit, who was initially penciled in to co-headline the show opposite BJ Penn, was promoted to fight St-Pierre. In order to ensure Penn had a date for Halloween weekend, Diaz was surprisingly slid into the co-main event spot against Penn.

Now that GSP has suffered a knee injury that will postpone his shootout with Condit, Diaz is once again the featured attraction on a major UFC card – which means, the “beauty pageants” that Diaz despises are about to begin again.

Diaz certainly took the scenic route, but he ultimately wound up exactly where he was meant to be, nonetheless.

The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada will host the shindig.
