After sitting out much of 2011 with a career-threatening eye operation, it was about time UFC middleweight Alan Belcher (Pictured) received some good news. Belcher was recently awarded his Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt through Helio Soneca BJJ (X3) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 27-year-old is one of only three to don a BJJ black belt in the state of Mississippi.
“It’s an honor to earn a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, a martial art I’ve trained in for nearly half of my life,” Belcher stated. “It is made much more special by the fact that I am included such a limited number of Mississippi residents, as well as the first in the Gulf Coast region, to earn the black belt.”
Belcher holds a 16-5 professional mixed martial arts record, with seven of his victories coming by way of tapout. He easily submitted Jason MacDonald via strikes last month at “UFC Fight Night 25.”
He began training jiu jitsu at the age of 14. He earned a blue belt in 2006, purple in 2007 and brown in 2009, all of which were earned from Helio Soneca.
