UFC 85: Bedlam is officially over as there was a changing of the guard in the Welterweight division with the bigger and stronger Thiago Alves taking out former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes in the 2ndRound. Michael Bisping also looked impressive in taking out the tough Jason Day.

Preliminary Bouts:

Antoni Hardonk Defeated Eddie Sanchez via TKO at 4:15 in the 2ndRound

Paul Taylor Defeated Jess Liaudin via Split Decision

Luis Cane Defeated Jason Lambert via TKO at 2:07 in the 1stRound

Kevin Burns Defeated Roan Carneiro via Submission – Triangle Choke at 3:56 in the 2ndRound

Matt Wiman Defeated Thiago Tavares via KO at 1:57 in the 2ndRound

Martin Kampmann Defeated Jorge Rivera via Submission – Guillotine Choke at 2:34 in the 1stRound

Main Bouts:

Fabricio Werdum Defeated Brandon Vera via TKO – Referee Stoppage at 4:40 in the 1stRound
There was some controversy after the fight was stopped because Vera was never in danger, but Werdum did have him in the full mount and was landing strikes. Many thought that the fight was stopped prematurely, but the referee is always taught to air on the side of caution for the fighter’s safety.

Thales Leites Defeated Nate Marquardt via Split Decision (28-27, 27-28, 28-27)
Marquardt had two points deducted from him, one in the 2ndRound for an illegal knee to a downed opponent and the other in the 3rdRound for an illegal blow to the back of the head. The 2nd point deduction was a questionable call as the replays showed that Marquardt hit the side of Leites’ head.

Mike Swick Defeated Marcus Davis via Unanimous Decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-27)
Swick was deducted a point for grabbing the cage but was able to dominate Davis in all three rounds.

Michael Bisping Defeated Jason Day via TKO – Referee Stoppage at 3:42 in the 1stRound
Bisping dominated the fight from the beginning as he took down Day at will and pounded him to the stoppage. It was by far Bisping’s best performance in the UFC as he’s working his way up towards a shot at Anderson Silva.

Thiago Alves Defeated Matt Hughes via TKO – Referee Stoppage at 1:02 in the 2ndRound
Hughes went for multiple takedown attempts, but Alves’ size and strength proved too much as Hughes’ left knee gave out and referee Herb Dean was forced to step in and stop the fight.

Fight Bonuses:

Knockout of the Night – Thiago Alves $50,000
Submission of the Night – Kevin Burns $50,000
Fight of the Night – Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares $50,000/each
