Although Junior dos Santos (Pictured) will be entering hostile territory tonight when he stands opposite “The baddest man on the planet,” dos Santos hasn’t been able to wipe the Kool-Aid smile off his face all fight week. That is simply because the Brazilian believes that nice guys finish first.
“When you are nice, nice things happen to you,” dos Santos professed. “I like to be nice. When I come inside the Octagon to fight, I take that very serious. I keep my focus on my opponent and my objective is to win the fight. I take that very serious.
“I just want to win the fight. I don’t want to hurt my opponent. I don’t want to hurt myself. I just want to win the fight and use my skills to do that.”
Challenging Cain Velasquez for his heavyweight crown is one thing, but headlining the UFC’s primetime television debut has certainly upped the ante. While the pressure to perform may be at an all-time high, 2Santos is prepared to seize the moment – while sporting the brightest of smiles, of course.
“I’m just really, really happy. I think it’s a privilege for me,” dos Santos said of showcasing his skills on FOX. “I’m really happy because the UFC trusts this big event on me and Cain Velasquez. It’s a big deal.
“I think it’s very important to keep your emotions in control because the goal inside the cage is to win the fight. You have to keep your focus on that. That’s what I try to do and hopefully that will help me win the fight.”
There will be an unprecedented amount of coverage for tonight’s heavily-hyped scrap. However, there certainly won’t be any need to tell dos Santos to smile big for the cameras.
The Honda Center in Anaheim, California will host Saturday night’s shootout. The FOX broadcast begins live at 9PM ET/6PM PT.
