Mixed martial arts fans will finally get the 170-pound clash they’ve been waiting for when UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre takes on Nick Diaz at UFC 143 on Super Bowl weekend.
Diaz was originally scheduled to face the French-Canadian in the main event at UFC 137, but the UFC pulled the plug when Diaz missed consecutive press conferences, or what he called “beauty pageants,” to promote the pay-per-view broadcast.
Although the deck may be stacked against the outspoken challenger, many believe his boxing could prove to be the difference in their highly-anticipated scrap.
It’s no secret St-Pierre’s wrestling has long been his bread and butter, but his prep work with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach (Pictured) might be the wild card.
If there’s one man who knows the sweet science of the mitts, it’s Roach. Even with an important boxing match between star pupil Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez on the horizon, he’s already begun scheming on how to dismantle Diaz.
“Started working game plan look forward to seeing how good a boxer Diaz really is,” Roach tweeted.
BJ Penn learned the hard way just how devastating the Stockton, Cali native is at throwing leather. The Hawaiian became Diaz’s 11th straight victim. The defeat was so lopsided that Penn has opted to take some time off, but fans may have seen the last of him.
Not many believe St-Pierre will even test his challenger’s stand-up skills, but when it comes to fighting, you can never say never.
UFC 143 takes place on February 4th from Las Vegas, Nevada.
