During Friday’s UFC 141 press conference, Octagon rookie Alistair Overeem (Pictured) made a bold statement regarding his showdown with Brock Lesnar. Not only does the former Strikeforce heavyweight champ profess he’s going to beat Lesnar, but he will absolutely maul him on December 30th.
“I’m going to tear this guy apart, piece by piece,” Overeem matter-of-factly stated.
The rambunctious crowd went nuts after “The Demolition Man” made his violent prediction, which promoted Lesnar to provide another one of his ho-hum responses.
“I’m happy for you,” said Lesnar.
Although their pay-per-view broadcast takes place on a Friday – instead of the traditional Saturday slot courtesy of New Year’s Eve – UFC president Dana White is expecting massive buys with the return of their 2010 meal ticket and addition of Overeem.
“I think this fight is gonna have a lot of buzz behind it,” White expressed. “People are gonna know when it is. There’s this gap from mid-December leading up through New Year’s where people are off work, people are at home. People are gonna know about this fight. We think it’s the perfect date [given that Saturday was not available].
“I think we’re gonna do just fine with this fight on Friday night.”
The heavyweights will battle to determine who gets next dibs at the UFC crown, which will be up for grabs tomorrow when reigning title holder Cain Velasquez defends his throne against Junior dos Santos.
UFC 141 takes place inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
