After watching current UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn take out former champion Sean Sherk at UFC 84, top lightweight contender Kenny Florian talked exclusively to 5thRound.com about his thoughts regarding the fight, as well as his next opponent at UFC 87, Roger Huerta.
Like many others in the MMA community, Florian was also surprised with Sherk’s strategy to, “out-box BJ, and with all the things that made him successful he decided to kind of throw it in the garbage can for that fight. I wish he would have fought like that against me. ”
After losing to Sherk in an open title bout nearly two years ago, Florian has been on a mission to prove that he is the best in the 155-lb. division.
When asked about what advantages he feels he might have over fellow up-and-comer Huerta, Florian confidently told us, “honestly, I think I have all the advantages.”
However, the Bostonian native understands that regardless of what might be said on paper, he still has to go out there and perform.
“I gotta go out there and prove it (that I’m the better fighter) that night, and I’m looking forward to doing that,” Florian explained.
UFC President Dana White has already stated that the winner of this fight will be next in line to take on Penn for the title. The time is now for Florian to step up and he knows it. With the depth that the lightweight division has, a loss to Huerta could be devastating for his aspirations of a title shot.
“I hope that I can do what others haven’t, and try to put him away,” stated Florian. “I just want to make it an exciting fight and I want to put the fight on my terms. I’m not gonna fight on his terms and get him to make that mistake and hopefully I’ll be there to finish it.”
Up until now, most UFC fans know Florian from his days as a contestant on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter. However, if Florian can defeat Huerta and get a shot at Penn’s belt, the MMA world will soon take notice as well.
