This past Sunday, recent Bellator signee Maiquel Falcao (Pictured) suffered a heart attack while at his home in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. According to his manager, Marcelo Brigadeiro, Falcao is currently awaiting cardiac catheterization and an angiogram for further diagnosis.
“His wife told me he suddenly suffered from a huge pain in the chest, and when they got into the hospital the doctors concluded he had a myocardial infarction,” Brigadeiro told Sherdog.com. “The procedure is expected to happen [later today].
“If Falcao didn’t go to the hospital as fast as he did he would have died.”
Brigadeiro claims his client has never had any major health issues, though did note a history of cerebral ischemia does run in his family. He is optimistic the 30-year-old will be able to resume his fighting career, but that is the least of anyone’s concern at the moment.
“He is lucid, talking clearly and recovering well”, he added. “The doctors gave a good prognosis, but we need to see how he reacts after the surgery. His career is in check, for sure, but at this first moment, we’re just focused on getting him healthy. After that, we will think about the rest of his career.”
Falcao made his claim to mainstream MMA fame as a one-and-done fighter for the UFC. After posting a unanimous decision victory over Gerald Harris at UFC 123 in November 2010, Falcao was released from the promotion after getting arrested in Brazil in relation to a 2002 assault charge.
The middleweight signed to fight for Bellator just last month.
