It appears light heavyweight champ Jon Jones will get his wish, as bitter rival Rashad Evans (Pictured) will be forced to take another fight to once again solidify his top contender status. According to ESPN.com, Evans will headline the UFC’s return to FOX against Phil Davis.
Evans initially earned his next dibs status when he posted a unanimous decision victory over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 114 in May of 2010. He then suffered a knee injury that allowed Jones to step in and beat Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the title.
“Suga” was slated to challenge Jones for his hardware at UFC 133, but a hand injury suffered by Jones nixed their showdown. Evans went on to easily dominate Tito Ortiz, though hurt his right hand in the process and is preventing him from fighting Jones at UFC 140.
Lyoto Machida now looks to dethrone “Bones” on December 10th.
Evans bumped his record to 16-1-1 after steamrolling Ortiz in August. His surgically-repaired haymaker has kept him sidelined since the victory.
Davis was originally slated to face Evans at UFC 133, but hurt his knee at the 11th hour and has been riding the pine ever since. “Mr. Wonderful” owns an unblemished 9-0 resume and most recently hung a lopsided unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira this past March.
The United Center in Chicago, Illinois will host the January 28th event.
Here are the athletes expected to appear in the show:
Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow
Demetrious Johnson vs. Eddie Wineland
Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans
