When ESPN The Magazine interviewed UFC President Dana White last week, it was announced by White that Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell would headline the UFC’s first event in Atlanta, Georgia on September 6th. Now, ESPN The Magazine has confirmed that Liddell’s mystery opponent is Rashad Evans, who was the second of his scheduled opponents for UFC 85. Both fighters were eventually scrapped completely from UFC 85.
Liddell injured his hamstring and Evans was pulled out completely after his opponent, James Irvin, suffered an injury. There’s no doubt that the winner of the fight will be the #1 contender to the UFC Light Heavyweight title that’ll be owned by either Quinton Jackson or Forrest Griffin.
Here’s what ESPN The Magazine had to say regarding Evans’ participation at UFC 88:
According to a UFC source, he will be Chuck Liddell’s mystery opponent in the organization’s debut in Atlanta. The fight has been agreed to in principle—the only thing left is the paperwork.
